Finding Your Next Big Career Move:

Using Your Zone of Genius to Navigate Change

Your Zone of Genius is that sweet spot where your natural talents, passions, and skills all intersect. It’s the work you do that feels effortless yet highly impactful, where you truly excel. When you operate in your Zone of Genius, not only do you perform at your best, but you also experience a sense of fulfillment and purpose. Knowing and tapping into this zone is crucial, especially when facing career changes or exploring new opportunities.

Who's in the Hot Seat?

Meet my client Shauna, a talented Creative Director at a small production company that’s been hit hard by the rapid changes in the entertainment industry. Shauna’s been feeling the pressure as her company faces financial instability, and she’s worried about the possibility of losing her job. The uncertainty of the industry has her questioning what comes next, especially since finding a new role in her field might not be easy.

Coaching Challenge

Shauna’s challenge was figuring out how to leverage her unique strengths—what we call her Zone of Genius—as she plans her next career move. The focus of our coaching sessions was on how she could use her inherent talents to explore new fields or even pivot into different industries.

Strategies to Leverage Your Zone of Genius

In our sessions, Shauna explored several strategies to harness her Zone of Genius. Here’s what worked for her:

Identify Core Strengths and Align Them with Market Needs Shauna started by getting clear on what her core strengths are—the skills and talents that set her apart. We did a deep dive into what she’s naturally great at and enjoys doing, like storytelling, visual creativity, and leading teams through complex projects. Then, we looked at how these strengths align with market needs outside of her current industry.

Shauna discovered that her storytelling ability and experience in visual creativity could be a huge asset in industries like marketing or digital content creation. By focusing on these strengths, she could start positioning herself for roles in these adjacent fields.

Expand Your Network with Intentionality Networking became a strategic tool for Shauna, but not in the traditional sense. Instead of just connecting with people in her current industry, she began reaching out to professionals in other fields where her Zone of Genius could be valuable. This was about expanding her horizons and learning how her skills could be applied in different contexts.

Shauna connected with leaders in digital marketing and tech startups, industries where creative storytelling is highly valued. These conversations helped her understand the language and needs of these industries, making it easier for her to see how she could fit in.

Experiment with Small Projects or Freelance Work To reduce the uncertainty, Shauna started taking on small projects outside her usual scope. This allowed her to test the waters in new industries without fully committing to a career change just yet. It also provided her with valuable experience and confidence as she considered broader career moves.

Shauna took on a freelance project with a tech company, helping them craft a compelling visual story for their brand. This project not only added to her portfolio but also opened her eyes to the potential of shifting her career towards tech.

Exploring your Zone of Genius is not just a good idea—it’s essential, especially when you are facing a career change. By identifying your unique strengths and aligning them with new opportunities, you can open doors to exciting possibilities you might not have considered. Take a moment to reflect on what you do best, and start thinking about how those strengths could be valuable in new fields or industries. Who knows? You might just find your next big career move right within your Zone of Genius.
